Chapter 12

Something was up. Roused early by loud voices and the sound of running feet, Kate sat up in bed and stared at her door. Her watch said eight a.m. and she fell back on to her pillow with a groan. She had only had about four hours sleep after the night’s escapades and she felt half dead.

Eventually dragging herself out of bed, she forced herself into the shower and emerged drying herself down with the strength of an eighty-year-old.

It was nearly an hour before she had recovered enough to leave her room and she walked straight into Adam, of all people.

‘Mr Lutterall is busy at the moment,’ he said briskly. ‘He sends his apologies and says he will join you later.’

‘Something happened, has it?’ she asked.

‘Please go through to the terrace, Mrs Lewis,’ he said, without answering her. ‘I will serve you breakfast shortly.’

With that, he was gone, striding off along the hallway and out through the front door.

Kate’s curiosity was now really aroused, but she went through the living room to the terrace as requested and drew up the chair she always used. A jug of fresh orange juice, together with a plate each of toast and croissants had already been set out for her and there was a percolator filled with hot coffee close to her plate. The smell of the coffee was irresistible and she poured herself a full cup straightaway.

As she sipped the drink, her gaze roved around the garden and the next instant she caught sight of Brent, accompanied by the lumbering figure of Delaney, emerging from the gateway leading to the helipad and walking towards the terrace.

Brent waved at her as he approached and nodded to Delaney who broke away from him and headed towards the passageway between the side of the house and the triple garage block.

Brent climbed the steps to the terrace and eased himself into a chair opposite her, immediately going for the coffee. He looked dreadful. Grey-faced, with bleary inflamed eyes and a constant twitch to his right cheek. Inwardly, Kate was delighted. He was obviously suffering from a very bad hangover and she knew from past experience that he would probably feel the effects of his night’s overindulgence for the rest of the day.

‘Bad night?’ she asked innocently, unable to resist rubbing it in.

He scowled, popped a couple of pills in his mouth from the pocket of his dressing gown and swallowed them in a single gulp.

‘Don’t remember much about it,’ he replied. ‘You sleep well?’

‘Like a top,’ she lied. ‘But what was wrong this morning? I heard people running about all over the place.’

He threw her a quick glance. ‘You didn’t hear any noises during the night, did you?’ he asked. ‘Like, er, someone walking up the stairs or along the walkway outside your room.’

She shook her head. ‘I heard what I think must have been you climbing the stairs after I’d gone to bed, but nothing else.’

Immediately she realised she had said the wrong thing.

‘Oh?’ he said.
